Balancing Mothering and Blogging

Blogging is a topic that is hard for me to stay away from. Although this is a blog about mothering, not blogging, I find it difficult to separate the aspect of blogging from my blog. Being a mom blogger who is balanced takes some strategic planning and discipline. Yet, being an effective and professional blogger takes work and time. As Moms, it is very important we know our boundaries and set limits so that we do not get sucked into the black hole of blogging. You do know that blogging has a black hole, right? rel11 by sprittibee, on Pix-O-Sphere

In order to have the best of both worlds, it's important to learn how to be an efficient blogger and spend your time wisely. There is an endless array of things on the Internet to keep us distracted--from blogging and mothering.

Today I'm going to share with you 4 things you can do to be a more efficient blogger.

  1. Know your purpose. If you don't know this, you're going to be an aimless wanderer. You're not going to know what to write about, so you'll either write about anything or or you'll write nothing. You'll most likely waste more time trying to figure out what to write than actually writing. You need to have some clear direction on what your blog's purpose is. Not only does this help you narrow down your topic choices, but it also helps attract readers because they clearly know your blog's focus.
  2.  Have a plan. After figuring out the purpose of your blog, it's important to have a plan; set some goals. You want to know what direction your blog is headed in so that you have clearly a defined aim. If you don't know where you're going, you're going to end up all over the blogging map--and take your readers there as well, or lose them in the process.
  3. Have set times & focus. Add some set blogging times into your schedule and when it's time to focus on blogging, focus on blogging. It's probably best to schedule this at a time your children are napping or sleeping, or are able to have some quiet time during the day. This will help you focus for a block of time to hash out a first draft, tweak & edit a saved draft, respond to comments or work on the technical aspects of your blog. Do not get sidetracked by social media or other time suckers!
  4. Don't get sucked into blog or link hopping. There is a time for reading and a time for writing. When you set aside your time to write, write! Don't twaddle your time away searching through other blogs or clicking link after link. Too many sessions of this and your blog will suffer - or your family will suffer because you will try to make up for the time missed blogging.

These are very basic foundations for efficient blogging. For more depth on these, including how to write faster, how to attract more readers, how to build community and that sort of thing, I highly recommend the eBook Simple Blogging. It shows you how to really make good use of your blogging time so you can be a great blogger and still the best mommy you can be.
